Cultural tourism
As more and more tourists seek authentic, high quality and interactive tourism experiences, the arts and cultural sector has enormous potential to enrich and add value to visitors’ experience. In addition, cultural tourism has potential to increase attendance at art and cultural events, increase the length of time visitors stay in WA and to boost visitor numbers.
The Department of Culture and the Arts and the Western Australian Tourism Commission have been working together to develop a cultural tourism strategy. Copies of Journey Further: An Arts and Cultural Tourism Strategy for Western Australia 2004-2008 is available by contacting the Department of Culture and the Arts.
The broad objectives of the partnership and the draft cultural tourism strategy are:
• Strengthen the perception of Western Australia as an artistic and culturally rich destination
• Facilitate development opportunities and linkages that better integrate the arts, culture and tourism sectors
• Encourage product development that builds on strengths and identified opportunities and is appropriate and competitive for target markets.
Strategies under development include
• working with hallmark art and cultural events to capitalise on tourism opportunities
• ensuring images of Western Australia's cultural attractions feature in Western Australian Tourism Commission marketing publications
• integrating and effectively linking the Western Australian Tourism Commission and the Department of Culture and the Arts' website information
• maximising Western Australian arts and culture opportunities in the meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions sector.
