Public Art
Public Art can be defined as permanent or ephemeral designs, artworks and creations developed by or with an artist in spaces accessible to the public.
Traditionally, public art has included large and colourful sculptures outside galleries, paintings in foyers or artist-designed seating, wall murals and paving. Today public art is this and much more. It is being created in all shapes and sizes – with different materials, for people to listen to, touch and climb on.
Public Art is part of our built environment, it is seen all around the state in spaces ranging from public lakes or vacant laneways to hospitals and police stations.
The Department of Culture and the Arts is proud to support a number of initiatives that enable the Western Australian arts sector, the community and our visitors to engage with art in public places.
Some of these initiatives include:
• Government Arts and Cultural Heritage Collections
• City of Fremantle Partnership
• Percent for Art Scheme
