3. PEEP: Glimpses of The Last 4 Decades From The Kerry Stokes Collection
Until 25 August
Curated by the late John Stringer, the exhibition 'PEEP' surveys tendencies in Australian and international art since the 1960s, showcasing many works which have not been publicly shown in Australia before. 'PEEP is a deeply personal journey that virtually spans John Stringer's long curatorial career.
Illustrating the diversity of art produced during the past four decades the exhibition focuses on the revival of imagery, content and social commentary towards the end of the second millennium. The exhibition begins with Pop, Op and pattern painting by internationally renowned artists such as Andy Warhol, Bridget Riley and Alfred Jensen; the new realism of Philip Pearlstein; and minimal and conceptual art by artists such as Haim Steinbach and Walter de Maria. Moving to the 1980s and beyond reveals aspects of the media explosion revolutionising the character of art over the past two decades.
Western Australian artists feature strongly in the exhibition with works by Miriam Stannage, Howard Taylor, James Angus, Cecile Williams, Matthew Hunt, Christian de Vietri, Steve Tepper and Philip Gamblen.

until 25 August 2008
As part of the Art Gallery of Western Australia’s ongoing Artist in focus series, ‘Circle of friends’ pairs up two young, Melbourne-based artists David Rosetzky and James Lynch. Central to the exhibition is the new acquisition for the State Art Collection – Rosetzky’s DVD projection Nothing like this, 2007, which explores the nuances of friendship amongst a group of twenty-somethings over a holiday weekend. The show will also include a new work by Rosetzky called No fear, a sound piece based on self-help tapes that involves subtle interaction between the work and its viewers. James Lynch is represented with a series of four short animations from 2003-2006 documenting his friends' dreams that have included him and to explore our subconscious connections and friendship fantasies. These superbly drawn animations demonstrate the complexities of our relationships and how we use each other to play unspoken and unknown roles in our lives.

6. Frank Hinder- Works From The Collection
14 June – 21 September
This Artist in focus exhibition will present a selection of pencil sketches, watercolours and finished paintings by Frank Hinder drawn exclusively from the State Art Collection. The exhibition sets out to explore the key interests of Hinder who, with contemporaries including Grace Crowley, Ralph Balson and Rah Fizelle, contributed significantly to the development of modernist theories in Australian art. Hinder had been exposed to the theory of dynamic symmetry – the geometric and organic ordering of space – during a formative period in the US, and upon his return to Australia set out to explore this in his artistic practice.

For the past five years Jo Darbyshire has been exploring the nature of water as a metaphorical element and a site. She has worked with the Swan River, the reefs off the coast of Western Australia and recently the frozen lakes of Banff, in Canada’s Snowy Mountains.
She uses oil paint to create deep layers of cool transparent colour, mesmerising areas of light and dark and a unique quality of illumination. Her work encourages the viewer to identify on a bodily level, enticing the imagination to produce the sensation of immersion, of apprehension and ultimately desire.

THE City of Fremantle is calling for expressions of interest from artists who want to help with this year’s Fremantle Festival Lotterywest Street Parade. To be held at 4pm, November 16, the parade is coordinated by the city’s festivals and events team with an emphasis on re-connecting with the local community.
City of Fremantle Community Development Officer Michelle Hovane said all groups across Fremantle and its suburbs were encouraged to have a say in the way they would like to see their city transform. “Artists are an integral part of the Fremantle community and have been central to the parade’s success since its beginning,” City of Fremantle Community Development Officer Michelle Hovane said.
Ms Hovane said the city was interested in hearing from artists wanting to work with community groups and schools, as well as those willing to develop their own proposals, to create floats and other artistic works for the parade.
Brief CVs and a short description of creative ideas relating to the festival’s theme of “transform” should be forwarded to Michelle Hovane at cdo@fremantle.wa.gov.au. “These will be then placed into a pool for consideration and matched with appropriate community groups,” she said.

32. Limbo, new works by Robyn Walton, at Heathcote Museum & Gallery
