4. Newton Faulkner: Return Of The Ginger-Dread Man
3 September
Newton Faulkner is not your ordinary singer songwriter – as he sings, his old-soul voice dips from a gently enchanting croon to a commanding roar full of yearning and intensity. His playing surpasses sensitive strumming, using his guitar as a hybrid instrument combining fret board pyrotechnics, unusual picking techniques, altered tunings and a mesmerising percussive use of the guitar’s body. The 23 year old Surrey, UK native, whose debut track “Dream Catch Me” has become the most played song on Australia radio, will bring his unique style and hit roots rhythms to Perth playing at the Capitol on Wednesday 3rd September.

Unquestionably one of the most important, influential & well favoured metal bands of our time, Carcass have reformed in 2008 to perform at several prestigious metal festivals throughout Europe. Soundworks Touring is incredibly excited & honoured to announce that Carcass will be performing in Australia to “Reek” havoc on our Carcass starved souls for the first time in 15 years! Along with originators Napalm Death, Carcass pioneered the heavy metal subgenre of grindcore, a style that in its purest form consisted of extremely short, chaotic blasts of guitar/bass/drums noise overlaid with guttural, bleeding-throat vocals. Carcass eventually shifted towards more traditional song structures, and then into a more accessible yet still highly intense thrash/grindcore hybrid.
Catch them playing at Capitol in Perth on Thursday 9th October.

11. Xavier Rudd announces australian tour in support of new album dark shades of blue
Beloved Australian musician/activist Xavier Rudd’s latest album Dark Shades of Blue is released in Australia on August 16th and in support of this, his seventh album, Xavier will be embarking on a month-long Australian tour this October/November.
Loud and psychedelic, Dark Shades of Blue highlights a side of Xavier Rudd merely hinted at on earlier releases. The guitar-driven songs, mixed by Joe Barresi (Tool, Queens of the Stone Age), are more complex and rocking than what audiences perhaps expect from the lifelong surfer and Dave Matthews tour mate. Yet fans will not be disappointed, for the new direction still holds true to Rudd’s passion for mixing rock and folk with indigenous instruments and other voices.
Along with his Australian tour, Xavier Rudd's much anticipated new album Dark Shades of Blue is now available for pre-order on CD and digital download! All pre-order participants will receive a digital download of the album’s title track Dark Shades of Blue instantly! Just head to Xavier’s website -http://www.xavierrudd.com/store/presale/ to be a part of it! Dark Shades of Blue is in store on Saturday August 16.
Tickets to Xavier; Rudd’s Dark Shades of Blue Australian Tour are on sale nationally Friday 18 July.

31. Movie music magic in ‘Soundtracks’
When in 1895 in Paris, the Lumiere brothers screened the first public projection of ten short films, the silent images on the screen were accompanied by live piano music. Even then, music was recognised as essential to contributing to the atmosphere of the film and giving the audience vital emotional cues.
From then through to ‘talkies’ to today’s computer-generated films, music has been an integral part of the cinema experience. Yet the best movie music lives long after the final celluloid image has flickered across the cinema screen. Classic songs such as ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ from The Wizard of Oz, ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ from Pinocchio and the title song from Singing in the Rain have all become mainstays in popular culture.
These songs are just part of a hit parade of memorable movie music that WAAPA’s Jazz and Contemporary Music students are taking to the stage of the Subiaco Arts Centre for Soundtracks on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 September at 7.30pm.
Ensembles including the WAAPA Big Band, the Latin Ensemble, the Jazz Choir and the Big Funk Band will swing, bop and rock their way through the theme from Rocky, the title song from Grease, ‘But Not for Me’ from When Harry Met Sally, ‘Power of Love’ from Back to the Future, Randy Newman’s ‘You’ve Gotta Friend in Me’ from Toy Story, Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujiah, used recently in the film Shrek, and many more.
A must for film buffs and music lovers, Soundtracks will breathe new life into some of the best known and best loved music of the silver screen.

34. New York jazz greats swing into town
Australian-born, New York-based jazz singer and composer Chris McNulty once described jazz musicians as opportunists, who “go where the audiences are and very often it’s a musician that sparks that interest to travel to a far-off place.”
It was indeed a jazz muso who inspired McNulty and her creative collaborator, guitarist Paul Bollenback to travel from New York to Perth for a one-off concert in September. The singer who is described as possessing one of the richest, most expressive voices on the international jazz circuit and the guitarist renowned for his emotionally expressive style and eclectic approach are coming to town for a gig with jazz pianist Graham Wood and his trio.
When Wood isn’t playing piano with bassist Matt Willis and drummer Chris Tarr, or performing solo with some of the biggest names in jazz, he is Program Director of Music at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and the driving force behind The Ellington Jazz Club, a dedicated jazz performance venue scheduled to open in Perth later this year.
Bollenback’s wide-ranging musical imagination backed by his upfront, powerful playing firmly establishes him as one of the most unique jazz guitarists in recent memory.

Roundhouse Theatre, WAAPA, Edith Cowan University, 2 Bradford St, Mt Lawley.

35. Nabarlek: The Garage Band That Never Had a Garage – WA Regional Tour
Regional and remote communities in Western Australia will have a chance to hear music inspired by the world’s oldest living culture when contemporary Indigenous band Nabarlek tours this September and October.
Country Arts WA, through its Shows On The Go program, will tour the award-winning band to 14 towns across the Kimberley, Goldfields, Ngaanyatjarra Lands, Wheatbelt, Pilbara and the Mid West.
A nine-piece rock group from an outstation called Manmoyi at Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, the band describes its music as ‘Indigenous Roots’, a style which combines rock, reggae, country and gospel, infused with traditional Indigenous elements such as tribal language.
Fuelled by their passion for music and desire to pass on their traditional culture, the band has made its way from humble beginnings (when it formed, the group owned two busted acoustic guitars and a set of upturned flour tins which served as a drum kit) to become one of Australia’s most popular Indigenous bands.
The group has previously performed with the Darwin Symphony Orchestra, Yothu Yindi and has supported Midnight Oil and, most recently, toured nationally supporting Australian music industry stalwarts Silverchair and Powderfinger. The group has earned a swag of awards and accolades including multiple Indigenous Music Awards as well as Deadly and ARIA award nominations.
Over the course of ten years Nabarlek has composed a repertoire of original songs based on traditional Indigenous stories of their past, people, land and culture and has recorded three albums, Munwurrk (Bushfire) in 1999, Bininj Manborth (Blackfella Road) in 2006 and last year released Manmoyi Radio. In addition, the group has released a live album recorded during the band’s 2004 Country Arts WA Regional Tour.
