7. Toy Time for Tots to Toddlers: Fremantle Toy Library Opens in Hilton

Noddy and his friends in Toyland have some competition on their hands, now the Fremantle Toy Library in Hilton has opened its doors. The Fremantle Toy Library has an array of toys, including ride-in-cars, bikes, scooters, puzzles, games, puppets, fancy dress, baby walkers and various activities for children aged up to six.

“The joy of toys for children is a wonderful thing, enlivening their imaginations while also helping them to learn,” Ms Caddy said. “Having the Fremantle Toy Library in Hilton is about taking toys to the people, making sure the children in our community have ready access to playthings as they grow and develop. “And our general library access is for the whole community, not just toy library members, giving people from all walks of life even more convenience when using our services.”

Open 9am to 2pm, Monday, Thursday and Friday and 9am to 5pm Tuesday.
Located in Progress Hall on Paget Street, the Fremantle Toy Library is managed by the Fremantle City Library, after being moved from Quarry Street.

8. Fremantle’s Blessing of The Fleet Celebrates 60 Years In 2008

26 October
Fremantle’s Blessing of the Fleet ceremony marks a major milestone in 2008 – 60 years of celebrating the new fishing season. The 60th anniversary celebration takes place on Sunday, October 26, with a treasure chest of delights as the Blessing of the Fleet procession makes its way from St Patrick’s Basilica to Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour.

“The Blessing of the Fleet is an old and revered tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation, highlighting the loyalty and solidarity among the fishing community,” Fremantle Councillor John Alberti said.
Cr Alberti described the fishing industry as an integral part of Fremantle’s identity with the Blessing of the Fleet continuing to be an extremely important cultural event each year. “It’s a quintessential part of our cultural melting pot and a constant reminder of Fremantle’s enduring connection to the sea,” he said.

The Blessing of the Fleet parade will start from St Patrick’s Basilica, 47 Adelaide Street, Fremantle, at 2pm, Sunday, October 26, and make its way to Fishing Boat Harbour before returning at 5pm.

9. The Western Australian Business and the Arts Partnership Awards (WABAPA)

The Western Australian Business and the Arts Partnership Awards publicly acknowledge outstanding partnerships between the business and arts and culture sectors. The Awards seek to promote the benefits business-arts partnerships can offer and to encourage new partnership initiatives.

There are six Prestige Partnership Award categories and each of the winning partners receives a trophy created by a Western Australian artist. One partnership is then selected from the category winners to be presented with the Most Outstanding Partnership.

The Awards also recognise individuals from both the arts and private sectors who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and made an invaluable contribution to the life of arts and culture in Western Australia.

10. Artsource - New Initiative

Artsource is piloting a new programme to invigorate critical review and debate in Perth and to expand the profile of Western Australian artists in the national and international media.  We are hosting a journalist and a photographer from the new Art World magazine in August who will be writing several articles on the art they encounter during their stay.  We are calling for expressions of interest from mid-career and senior artists who are interested in receiving a studio visit from the Art World team. To be eligible, artists must:
• be current Plus or Max members of Artsource;
• be engaged in a contemporary visual arts practise,
• have a strong history of exhibitions and/or commissions, and
• have had a solo show in the last two years.

We would also like to hear of any relevant exhibitions/events that are on in August to recommend to our visitors.

12. Business School - Leading in Creative Contexts

Leading in Creative Contexts, chaired by Dr Helen Lancaster, features international papers and presentations on difference aspects of arts and creative leadership and their relevance for leadership development beyond the creative industry sector.

It will provide a unique and timely forum for members of the arts community, business, government and the general public to consider creative leadership in every sense.
The stream is scheduled to take place over one and a half days, with the public Roundtable as the highlighted event in the evening of the first day. Leading into the Roundtable, there will be a session which features leadership development through creative arts workshops.
Papers, Presentations and Performance (22 – 23 July) explore the role of leadership in the creative arts and the significance of creative arts in understanding and developing leadership. Presenters are drawn from a range of countries and creative disciplines and contexts.

14. Tender to be Advertised - Australia’s Cultural Program for Shanghai World Expo 2010

Shanghai World Expo 2010 will take place from 1 May to 31 October 2010.  It will be the biggest World Expo in history, involving more than 170 nations and 70 million visitors.   Australia’s presence is being coordinated by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).  In late August 2008, DFAT will tender for management of the Expo’s cultural program, which will be representative of all of Australia and include a variety of art forms.

15. CCIWA International Trade Day

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia (CCI), with the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Austrade and the Department of Industry and Resources of Western Australia, is hosting an international trade open day on Thursday 21st August, 2008.

Industry service providers at International Trade Day will provide Western Australian importers and exporters with information and advice on importing, exporting and trade-related activities including;
• starting up an import or export business
• finding suppliers or buyers in Australia or overseas
• market information
• customs and cargo inspection information
• how to promote your business to the world
• export assistance programs and grants

16. Intercultural Arts Research Project

OMI has commissioned Deakin University to find out about the involvement of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) artists in WA. By CaLD we mean people whose ancestry is not Indigenous or Anglo-Celtic/Anglo Saxon.

We would really appreciate it if you would spread the word in your community and encourage people to fill in this on-line survey. It is for people who participate in Art for work or for fun.

We would like to hear from as many CaLD Artists as possible whether you are involved in dance, visual arts, multimedia arts, singing, playing music, theatre, performance art, writing or film-making.

18. Shinju Matsuri Festival of the Pearl 2008

Shinji Matsuri is a 10 Day festival which celebrates Broome’s multicultural history. Shinju Matsuri not only acknowledges the pearling industry, it is also an opportunity to showcase Broome’s natural beauty, unique history and diverse character to the outside world. 19. Town of Vincent - Stall Holders Needed

The Town of Vincent is holding a community street festival in Angove Street, North Perth on Sunday 30 November 2008 between 10am and 4pm. There will be an organic produce market, entertainment, performers, children’s activities and art/craft/jewellery stalls.

We are looking for emerging fashion, art/craft and jewellery designers as stall holders. Your products must be original and of a very high standard. There is no cost to have a stall at the festival.

21. Black Swan Theatre Company and Perth Theatre Company

The Boards of Black Swan Theatre Company and Perth Theatre Company have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), outlining their intent and commitment to examine the compatible activities and synergies of both Companies as they prepare for their move to the New Performing Arts Venue in Northbridge, The Heath Ledger Theatre.

The two Companies have agreed to form a working party, consisting of four representatives from each Company and including both operational and artistic Management and Board members. The working party will explore all issues relating to the identification and maximization of opportunities for co-operation.

Whilst the MOU states the intention to investigate all opportunities for co-operation, the memorandum does not constitute a commitment to merge both Companies. All decisions on any aspects of the Companies’ co-operation will form part of a business plan which will be prepared by the working party for submission to both Boards in the near future.

23. Yellow Glass Theatre Inc. Auditions

We are currently seeking two male actor/singers for roles in our upcoming productions of The Travelling & The Last Five Years.

1. The Travelling is a brand new chamber musical (loosely based on the opera Pagliacci) written by Chris Kabay and Adam McGurk, with music by Simon R Holt. We are seeking a male performer (stage age late 30’s) to play the lead male role of an Australian father seeking revenge. Must have very strong acting and singing skills!

Performance dates: Fri 19 – Sat 20 Sept, Wed 24 – Sat 27 Sept, Wed 1 – Sat 4 Oct, Wed 8 - Sat 11 Oct (All performances 6:30pm – 7:30pm)

2. The Last Five Years is a contemporary song-cycle musical that ingeniously chronicles the five year life of a marriage, from meeting to break-up... or from break-up to meeting, depending on how you look at it. We are seeking a male performer (stage age mid to late 20’s) to play the role of Jamie. Must have very strong acting and singing skills. The role of Jamie is more or less a rock tenor role with singing range from low A to high Bb.

Performance dates: Wed 5 – Sat 8 Nov, Wed 12 – Sat 15 Nov (All performances 8:00pm – 9:20pm)
