2. Married Life - Thurs At Cinema Paradiso + Luna on SX [M]
'The setting is post-war America. As stringent moral codes begin creeping back into private life, members of the upper and middle classes must begin to be careful. But caution can always be overcome by beauty and charm, and this is the theme of Married Life, a stylish, sophisticated drama starring some of the most accomplished actors working today.
Ira Sachs’s third feature is the devilish story of two men driven to villainy by their desire for one woman. Nebbishy Harry Allen (Chris Cooper) is a sentimental fool of a certain age. He has fallen head over heels in love with a beautiful and soulful blonde named Kay (Rachel McAdams from The Notebook), whose husband disappeared during the war; he spoils her unashamedly. The only problem is that Harry is married to the smart and sensual Pat (Patricia Clarkson from The Station Agent), who sees herself as his keeper. Too cowardly to upset her by breaking things off for Kay – Pat begins hyperventilating when he even hints at the gulf between them – Harry soon settles on a drastic means of ending the marriage without causing his wife any undue suffering.' Special Opening Night Event Thurs 14th August at Cinema Paradiso
From writer/director Tom McCarthy (The Station Agent) & from the producers of Sideways comes this soulful new comedy drama.
Richard Jenkins (6 Feet Under) stars as a melancholy professor sleepwalking glumly through his life and career. His terminally beige existence changes when he encounters a vibrant international couple living illegally in an apartment he keeps in New York: an ebullient Arab drummer (Haaz Sleiman) and his understandably skittish African girlfriend (Danai Gurira). In the first of a series of tests of the heart, Walter reluctantly allows the couple to stay with him.
Touched by his kindness, Tarek, a talented musician, insists on teaching the aging academic to play the African drum. The instrument's exuberant rhythms revitalize Walter's faltering spirit and as the friendship between the two men deepens, the differences in culture, age and temperament fall away.
6. Female Agents (Les Femmes De l'Ombre)
Thurs at Cinema Paradiso [MA15+]
In May 1944, a group of French servicewomen and resistance fighters are enlisted into the British Special Operations Executive commando group under the command of Louise Desfontaines (Sophie Marceau) and her brother Pierre (Julien Boisselier). Their mission, to rescue a British army geologist caught reconnoitering the beaches at Normandy, and to kill a German SS colonel, who is close to figuring out the imminent secret of D-Day, proves to be emotional and brutal. The story is inspired by the accomplishments of decorated SOE agent Lisé de Baissac.

6:45pm for 7:00pm Tuesday 12th August at Luna Leederville. Join us for a special preview screening of Sharkwater with a Q&A after the film with special guest speakers. All tickets $15 from Luna Leederville and online. Part proceeds go to Sea Shepherd.
There are few films that can completely change your view on something, and this would count among them. It highlights sharks in a completely different light and will give you a new appreciation and admiration for them. Rob Stewart's informative and incredibly entertaining documentary looks at not only our culture's reaction to the massive critters, but he also wisely pays tribute to them by filming beautiful underwater footage of sharks in movement. Add to that, the film gently bends over into the political territory of international shark poaching - and those ignorant fools who consume shark fins.
