Playwright Development Program

This Program is open to established playwrights to undertake creative development residencies. Residencies may take place outside of Western Australia where the facilities sourced for the project provide the high level of support required for a rigorous period of script development.

The program assists playwrights to develop an existing first draft over a concentrated period of up to three weeks. The working process may comprise of collaboration with directors, dramaturges, playwright mentors, as well as writing time and rehearsal time with actors. The residency must culminate with a public reading of the script.

The panel is limited to awarding two Playwright Development Program grants per year.

Assessment Criteria

The Panel assesses applications against the assessment criteria of the Arts Grants Program. In addition, applications must also:
  • Demonstrate the potential of the project to achieve excellence and relevance on a national scale.

Eligibility

In addition to the general eligibility requirements of the Arts Grants Program, applicants should be aware that:
  • Have a minimum of one professionally produced work.

Support Material

Please see general support material of the Arts Grants Program. In addition applications must include:

  • Two copies of a completed first draft script.
  • Two application script assessments will be provided through Stages WA’s Playwrights’ Consortium.

Applications which have been unsuccessful may be resubmitted to future Playwright Development Program funding rounds only once. Resubmitted applications must include a new application script assessment.

The Playwright Development Program is supported by the Australia Council for the Arts, the Australian Government’s arts funding and advisory body and the State Government of Western Australia through the Department of Culture and the Arts. Australia’s national peak body for playwriting, PlayWriting Australia (PWA) is also contributing to this initiative and has agreed to assist WA playwrights with script development projects through this program.
