The Dave Mann Collective  $11,000
Promote the tour and release of the album ‘Heart Over Mind’ in May 2008. This will be done through hiring a publicised, radio plugger, website development and online marketing campaigns. The release of DMC’s second full-length CD will build on the radio airplay and solid reviews achieved for the single Everybody’s Girl which follows a full year of solid touring for the group collectively and Dave Mann in solo mode.

Arts Radio Ltd (RTRFM 92.1)  $20,800
To digitise RTRFM’s local music library. This project will make local music accessible from the on-air studios and will further increase RTRFM’s coverage and promotion of local music. The project will give presenters far great access to more local music as they will be able to select and play local tracks at the click of a button.

South West Aboriginal Entertainment  $17,000
Monthly performances to showcase and profile metropolitan and regional Indigenous musicians. The Chocolate Martini has been successfully held at the Bakery ARTRAGE Complex in Northbridge since April 2007, its purpose is to develop and showcase WA Indigenous musicians to a more mainstream audience in the centre of Perth.

City of Albany  $10,458
‘The Recipe for Jam Residential’: a series of workshops over six days as part of the Vancouver Arts Centre Music Professional Development Program. In 2008 the Residential will be in its 4th year with proven high results. The program develops and supports young emerging musicians through a learning environment in which networking, performance, music industry knowledge, self-esteem building and team building is packed into a professionally delivered 6-day intensive program.

Paul Bilsby  $9,763
Paul Bilsby will undertake a mentorship to develop sound mixing and mastering skills at the internationally renowned London recording studio, ‘The Shell’ owned and operated by sound engineer, Toni Economides. The main focus will be mixing electronic dance music while utilizing high-end digital audio workstations such as Pro-tools HD, and various top of the line Equalization/Compression/Reverberation and Limiter units.

Juliet John  $5,301
Juliet John will be undertaking a mentorship with three national publicists to broaden her existing PR and marketing skills. Juliet has been running a publicity company called Caveman! since 2005. This mentorship will enable WA bands to reach a wider audience both in Perth and to capitalise fully on touring the east coast by the use of focused publicity and marketing campaigns through Caveman!

Kanchana Karunaratna  $4,875
Travel to Accra, Ghana, to undertake advanced study in West African rhythms and drumming as part of the Kusun Study Tour 2008. The subject of study will be West African drumming and rhythms and Kanchana will be taught by the talented, Nii Tettey Tetteh. Kanchana is the current percussionist with Blue Shaddy and has worked with Steve Tallis, Maera Paki, Beth Preston (USA), Ash Grunwald and many DJ’s.

The Harlequin League  $5,000
Pop rock four-piece Harlequin League – winner of 2007’s Next Big Thing competition are set to record their debut five-track EP with Woody Annison at 001 studios in Melbourne utilizing digital technology. The EP follows on from their ‘Hole in the Heart’ single release in 2007.

Naomi Pigram  $9,500
Naomi Pigram to produce and release a full length album of original music to be promoted throughout Western Australia. The album will be produced by Rob Agostini at Soundbaker Studio’s and released through Skinnyfish Music. Naomi is one of the most exciting new indigenous female artists to spring from the dynamic culture of Broome and has fronted notable Indigenous bands, One Strum and St Agnes.

The Slaughter House Five  $6,781
Three piece grungy-rock band, The Slaughter House Five will record a 12-track album following on from their EP released in 2006. Nine drum tracks will be recorded at Poons Head Studios by Rob Grant and other tracking and mixing will be undertaken at Full Power Studio by Dan Majer. Mastering will be at Sovereign Studios and the launch is set to take place in August 2008.

Andrew Winton  $15,432
Andrew Winton to record, produce and release his third solo album entitled ‘Surface Tension’ due for release in February 2009. Andrew is an independent solo artist combining acoustic guitar, lap slide, dobro and seven-string lap guitar/bass to provide an engaging and authentic performance.

Abbe May and The Rockin’ Pneumonia  $10,000
Undertake a national tour to promote the launch of their debut album ‘Howl and Moan’ by ‘Abbe May and The Rockin’ Pneumonia’, May 2008. Abbe May is the WAMi Award winning artist for Best Female Vocalist in 2007 and 2008 and her home recorded self titled CD has sold over 2000 copies.

The Dirty Secrets  $9,880
The Dirty Secrets to undertake an east coast tour together with Sydney band (Grafton Primary) including major cities and regional hubs to promote the release of their debut self-titled album. The Dirty Secrets recorded their album with Canadian producer Alan Brey and UK engineer (Klaxons, Libertines, Suede, Franz Ferdinand) and signed a deal with Avex, the biggest independent label in the world.

Simon Kelly  $8,651
WA roots artist Simon Kelly and his band have been invited by Harbour Agency to undertake a tour of the Eastern States supporting established acts. The Simon Kelly band will be promoting the release of their debut album ‘Tribal Astronaut’ and hope to extend their fan base into the east coast roots scene in June 2008.

Roly Skender and The Tonics  $14,714
‘Roly Skender & The Tonics’ to undertake a 14 day tour of Japan, July 2008. Roly Skender and the Tonics will tour to Nagoya, Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto and Tokyo to promote their Album ‘Electric Umbrella’ and their forthcoming release. The band has featured on the 2007 and 2008 WAMi compilations as well as receiving extensive airplay on RTRFM and Channel 31.

Jeff Strong  $9,647
Jeff Strong and his band will tour to rural and remote WA to promote his self-titled debut album and new single ‘Freeway’. The ‘City and Western’ tour will build on the success of previous tours in the Kimberley and Mid-west where Jeff has developed an extensive fanbase.

The Slim Pickins  $10,544
Blues inspired rockers The Slim Pickins will embark on a national tour playing 9 shows across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane to promote the ‘Slim Pickins’ EP release, ‘The Scotch of Saint James’, May 2008. The Slim Pickins received a WAMi nomination for their track ‘Piece of the Pie’ and extensive RTR and JJJ airplay for ‘One More for the Road’ both tracks from their debut album. 

Kill Teen Angst  $11,497
Indie rock four-piece Kill Teen Angst will tour nationally in May in support of their EP release Good Cop Bad Cop. Following their WAMi award for Rock Song of the Year for their track ‘The World or Nothing’ Kill Teen Angst have gained a dedicated following through exposure on JJJ and RTRFM.

The Mace Francis Orchestra  $15,680
14 piece creative jazz group The Mace Francis Orchestra will embark on a national tour taking in prestigious jazz clubs including Jazzworx (Brisbane), SIMA (Sydney) and Bennets Lane (Melbourne). The tour will feature performances of the group’s new album MFO funded with the assistance of an Australia Council Buzz Grant.

Home Brew  $5,005
Home Brew is a five piece blues band from Bunbury who will make two appearances at The Blues on Broadbeach festival on the Gold Coast. Home Brew will use this opportunity to launch their recently recorded CD.

Simon Phillips Band  $10,190
The ‘Simon Phillips Band’ to undertake a tour of the Eastern States to support the album release, ‘The Tree’ in May 2008. Simon will team up with fellow Western Australian singer-songwriter, Dave Mann for a series of gigs in Victoria and New South Wales.
