Artist Talks: Young People and the Arts International Scholarships

In November 2011, young emerging artists and arts workers attended an Artist Talks session hosted by the Young People and the Arts team at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA). Emerging visual artist and 2009 YPA International Scholarship recipient, Joshua Webb, spoke at the session and offered an insight into studying overseas, living in a foreign country, and preparing an application for the DCA Young People and the Arts (YPA) International Scholarship.
Joshua used the YPA International Scholarship to complete his final year of a Masters degree in Fine Arts at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), USA.
“I couldn’t find the people with the right skills who I wanted to learn from in Perth at the time; I really wanted the opportunity to be so close to the artistic hub of New York and get access to opportunities that manifest from being a student of RISD.”
It is a requirement of the YPA International Scholarship funding category that the applicant’s chosen course of study provides specialist training that is currently unavailable in Australia, of which Joshua’s course of study provided.
Joshua shared his many insights and realities of planning to study overseas. He was asked if his expectations had changed from the application to finally undertaking the course and responded  “Yes, definitely. Just how much it would cost me to live and study overseas was expensive and this realisation meant I needed to undertake a relentless process of asking for money.”
The key piece of advice Joshua gave attendees was to “give yourself enough time to prepare your application!”
“Going away and living overseas, it opened my eyes to opportunities outside of Australia which I didn’t know about when living in Perth. I didn’t realise you could go overseas and develop international networks like I have. Now most of the work I do is international – it’s been a slow snowball kind of effect.” – Joshua Webb

The DCA Young People and the Arts International Scholarship offers $30,000 annually to one outstanding young artist or arts worker, aged 29 years or under, to undertake specialist training at an overseas institution.

Artist Talks: Young People and the Arts Fellowships

Each year DCA award three successful young applicants with a $15,000 Fellowship Grant to grow their arts practice through an intensive period of development.

The Young People and the Arts team hosted an information session with artist talks in June 2011 at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA). Young emerging artists and arts workers interested in DCA's Young People and the Arts Fellowship Grants  attended the session.

Three successful Fellowship applicants spoke about their experiences and offered valuable advice for all who attended. You can listen to the three Artist Talks below.

Artist Talks

Briony Stewart
Writer and Illustrator.

"The whole of that (Fellowship) year was pretty much a massive learning curve; one that actually taught me more than I was hoping to learn, and one that also led to a lot of great opportunities for me during the year and following that year..."- Briony Stewart.

Shubhadra Young
Singer and Actress.

"I broke the application into three sections: there was the need, there was the budget, and there were the support materials and references. ... The need is really important because it's an investment of your time as an artist, and it's also an investment from your city..." - Shubhadra Young.

Russell Leonard
Performer.

"I think the biggest point would be to communicate with (a Project Officer), look at the internet, read everything that's about, find the validity in what you're trying to do and articulate it (in your application)." - Russell Leonard.
