The State Government has made available a funding pool of $380,000 for new productions through application by sections of Western Australia’s theatre industry, including independent producers.
Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the pool comprised funds which had been previously earmarked for the former Deckchair and ThinIce theatre companies.
“The funding is for small to medium theatre companies and independent theatre producers to present new Western Australian works in 2013-14,” Mr Day said.
“An independent panel representing the theatre sector will be appointed to assess the applications and results should be announced in April.
“I have requested the Department of Culture and the Arts to consult theatre stakeholders regarding the future use of this funding and to provide options to support WA’s theatre sector.
“I expect there to be a strong response from the sector for this funding, and I would encourage emerging producers, writers and directors to consider applying.”
The Minister said Western Australia has a viable, dynamic theatre sector.
“The State Government provided $4,265,906 in core funding to the sector‘s major organisations in 2012 - this is an increase of 19.5 per cent since 2007,” he said.
“Opportunities such as the opening up of this funding pool will help ensure more opportunities for local theatre productions."
Registrations of interest will close on Thursday February 28, 2013, following which the Department of Culture and the Arts will hold an information session to outline the application process.
