Perth will get a bite of The Big Apple from June with an exclusive series of exhibitions from New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Culture and the Arts Minister John Day today officially announced details of the Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters exhibition which is the result of collaboration between the Art Gallery of WA (AGWA) and MoMA.

Perth’s cultural heart will come alive with entertainment and activity this Sunday, April 29 as ‘O’ Day celebrations return to Northbridge. Planning and Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the event would offer free fun and family entertainment with live music, interactive children’s activities and street performances in the surrounds of the revitalised Perth Cultural Centre.

The State Government has awarded $20,000 to two outstanding project teams to develop their digital projects following their participation in the internationally acclaimed think tank X/Media/Lab. Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the recipients of this year’s Perth Development Awards were Anthony Sweet, Barbara Connell, Josh Hogan and Richard Kong for their project Grand City; and Ethan Marrell, Paul Montague and Natalie Lewis for Super Dingo.

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day today launched a new website for the State Library’s Better Beginnings family literacy program. Mr Day said that it was vital for families to support their children’s literacy and learning and the new website provided high quality literacy materials to create positive experiences through books and language.

Premier Colin Barnett today officially opened the West Australian Ballet Centre in Maylands - the new permanent home of the West Australian Ballet. “I congratulate the West Australian Ballet on the opening of their outstanding new venue which will provide state-of-the-art training and rehearsal facilities for our State Ballet Company and will be a lasting asset for dance in WA,” Mr Barnett said. West Australian Ballet’s move from His Majesty’s Theatre to the former Royal Institute for the Blind building is the result of some important partnerships. “Support for the centre has come from the State Government, Lotterywest; City of Bayswater; Department of Culture and the Arts (DCA); and the private sector,” the Premier said.

Thirteen schools across Western Australia are about to take part in a program linking students with local artists to foster creativity across the education curriculum. Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the $1.12million pilot Artist-In-Residence (AIR) grants program, now in its fourth year, had resulted in thousands of students teaming up with some of the State’s most talented artists on ambitious and highly creative projects.
